. always sounds good to say that. friday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. let's begin with a stunning new possibility in the investigation into the san bruno blast this morning. pg&e are looking into a bacterial cause and what's most frightening is it can be found anywhere. jenelle is live with the latest. jenelle? >> kristen, this has happened before ten years ago in the new mexico desert. a 13-inch transmission line just like the one that ran through the san bruno neighborhood ruptured killing 3 young children. called influence corrosion. microbes that go undetected in a tiny pool of stagnant water in the pipeline and eating away at the metal causing it to corrode. pg&e told state regulators last year that there was ongoing concern about the potential for internal corrosion along the 46-mile pipeline that ran from san francisco through san bruno down to milpitas. the corrosion has shown up in several tests along the line. an environmental microbe biologist outside of pg&e said any pipe as old as this one could have microbes hiding inside of it. the o

morning. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. topping our news this half hour, pg&e is investigating the possibility that microbes inside a natural gas pipe might have caused the deadly san bruno explosion two weeks ago, this unlikely but has happened before. jenelle is live in san bruno to tell us more. >> yes, it has, ten years ago in the new mexico desert that pipeline ruptured killing 12 including three young children. investigators found pitting in the pipeline. the corroded area spread across 21 feet of the pipe and some areas 72% of the pipe wall had been eaten away. now, that pipeline in new mexico was over 50 years old and 30 inches in diameter. those are the exact same specs as the pipeline here in san bruno. the possible cause is called microbiological influence corrosion. this report came out in the san francisco chronicle this morning. it's basically micros that go undetected in a tiny pool of water inside the pipeline and then start eating away at the metal causing it to corrode. according to the article this morning, pg&e told state regulators last y

so well built that in fact, they are still in use. the engineers said we have to replace a ball bearing. we of course, have neglected our infrainstruct our and it's rated to be a d and dropping. so if you don't pay your taxes, things do fall down. much of it is things that were built during the new deal. fortunately, they built them very well. so the stuff was really built to last. but, if you don't have taxes to run a state. i expect we will see more of that stuff. i will give you a brief tour that we take for granted. the commitment to public education in all its manifestations. public schools from kindergarten to higher education. there are thousand of new deal schools built within less than ten years. many have art work in or on them. this is berkeley high school. you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. the schools are always telling you that public education can make you better. it should be free. now, public education was fortunatate in california. just in time for them to move in. they build hundreds of schools. seismically safe schools. when you enter

into burkeo's stopped police car in 2006. vic lee joins with us more. vick? >> the defendant was convicted on all 10 counts, including murder, robbery, and evading a police officer. it was an emotional hearing which was attended by dozens of police officers and police brass. he broke down and cried after the verdict was read. he was 19 when the crime occurred, and july 26th, 2006, he and two others fled in a stolen car after a robbery on bay shore boulevard. he led police on a car chase wound through the city, and highway 280. the van crashed into officer burkeo's patrol car. he was a police officer stationed at bay view station on the force five years. petrelli out on bail at the time. after the verdict the officer's father spoke to us. >> there are petrelli weing forrive you. you're just human. you make mistakes z your family, we bear no grudge or bitterness against also, you. >> and there would be a hearing on october 22, to set a date for sentencing. since this was a murder committed during a robbery, this is a special circumstances case which means he could get live without parole. tw

to the environmental director about this task. and she joins us live. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: yes, i just spoke with dean peterson, who is the director of the environmental health division of the county. he wants to get crews back to work. i want you to take a look behind me. we are on clairemont and vermont. and you can see the devastation throughout here. work is going really three home sites at a time. so you can see kind of in distance where there is an excavator and bulldozer over there. we assume that that's where some of the work will be going on. they are going piece by piece back here. and that process does continue. this morning, dean peterson told me that operations yesterday, which was the first day of demolition, went well. the first to actually finish yesterday as planned. but they are expected to be cleared up sometime this morning. and crews move onto the next three. there were more than three dozen homes destroyed. and so far, the county has been given the go-ahead to clear the sites. health concerns, a big issue out here. but the air is being monitored, both right next t

that water had shown up in tests. the key to fighting this corrosion apparently using chemicals or robots to scrape microbes away but apparently pg&e says the pipeline in san bruno was too narrow and had too many bends for some of the recommended treatments. pg&e said it did use ultrasonic techniques to detect corrosion and didn't find any. meanwhile, the public utilities commission has voted to bring an independent panel in to investigation this explosion, looking into what pg&e and state agencies could have done to avoid the disaster. state leaders are pushing to make sure pg&e pays for the cost of the panel out of its own profits so customers do not have to foot the bill. right now, heavy demolition and clean-up are going on here at the site in the neighborhood leveled by that explosion. the 35 homes that were burned to the ground will be removed. that process started yesterday. large excavators and workers in protective gear are working on three homes a day. at the same time, street sweepers and water trucks work to keep the area clean by reducing the threat of toxic dust. >> want to
